I hate pushiness.

I can’t stand
  • telemarketing calls.
  • flyers left under my windshield.
  • other people’s agendas thrust upon me.

I’ve walked out of car dealerships mid-contract because I knew if I stayed one minute longer, I’d regret the purchase for the next ten years.

Pushy vs. Bold & Confident

When it comes to my relationship with God, I feel secure in who I am in Christ.

Because of Christ and our faith in Him,
we can now come boldly and confidently
into God's presence.

Ephesians 3:12 (NLT)

Gone are the days when I felt like a bother. An inconvenience. A nuisance.

At least in relating to God.

But in sharing God with unbelievers?

I feel like a bother, an inconvenience, and a nuisance.

I don’t know how to be bold and confident.

I’m too afraid of being pushy.

A Permission Marketing World

The days of traditional interruption advertising are over. We live in an era of “permission marketing.”

In some ways, has resulted in greater courtesy: the threat of a spam report keeps advertisers from sending me unwanted e-mail.

In other ways, though, it has made people super-sensitive to receiving anything they did not invite.

And although I live in an area that touts tolerance, I often fees as though this “tolerance” ends at the edge of Christianity.

As long as the conversation is about anything other than Christianity, it’s no-holds-barred. But at the mere mention of something Christian, it’s as if I’m shoving my entire belief system down someone’s throat.

And it’s not just a regional issue.

I’ve spent hours listening to the beliefs and rituals of loved ones who practice wicca. But the respect of equal time, or even a willing ear, is rarely reciprocal.

A Season of Confidence

God calls each one of us differently.

This year, I’m hearing His urging to “be bold, be daring” when I’m out and about this holiday season.

I don’t know what that’s going to look or sound like. I’m used to “preaching to the choir” or “feeding his lambs.” I’ve never been a “fisher of men.”

I am aware that my silent witness says far more than my words. So this isn’t about planning ahead what I’m going to say when the cashier avoids saying "Merry Christmas" with a politically-correct “happy holidays.”

This is about who I am, 24/7.

And up ‘til now, who I’ve been 24/7, has been efficient. I have my shopping list, my schedule, and my plan. I’ve counted my time away away from home successful if I’ve gotten everything I’ve needed in the least amount of time possible.

I’ve been courteous to the Starbucks barista...but not kind.

I’ve bagged my own groceries at Safeway...to save time, not offer a helping hand.

I’ve been so afraid of being pushy that I’ve forgotten how to be friendly.

10 Ways to Keep Christ in Christmas

Before I start my list, let me mention that Stephanie Shott has a great blog post at The M.O.M. Initiative called “25 Ways to Keep Christ in Christmas.”  FULL of fabulous ideas!

1. John 15:17 “This is my command: Love each other.”  The #1 way I will keep Christ #1 is by living in His love and loving others. Period.

2. Pray before getting out of the car. I want to be intentional about focusing on being kind, gracious, and loving to the many people who will serve me as I go about my errands.

3. Ask others about their holiday plans and traditions. I’m less likely to feel pushy if a Christmas conversation is already underway. And listening is the most basic of friendship skills!

4. Giving gifts thru Project Angel Tree with Prison Fellowship Ministries helps me keep things in perspective -- knowing that God in the flesh has come to set the captives (me included!) free.” (Stephanie Raquel)

5. “We bake a birthday cake for Jesus and sing Happy Birthday to Him and our church has a PJ Christmas service every year.” (Chris Kramer)

6.  "We put out all our Christmas cards in a basket and use them as dinner table prayer reminders throughout the year." (Lee Merrill)

7.  "We sponsor a family during the weeks leading up to Christmas and provide gifts for the children and food for Christmas dinner--when my boys were at home we involved them in all aspects of sponsoring the family, including delivering the food and gifts." (Laura Acuña)

8.  I ask cashiers, "How are you?" At times they may seem down, and I comment, "You seem to be carrying a heavy load." If they nod "Yes" (and they usually do), I add, "May God bless you." They always respond, "Thank you." After that, I will ask how they are and add, "God bless you." They begin to look forward to that. If I am in a different line, they acknowledge me in some way.

9. "We fill shoeboxes with treats and treasures for children. Through Operation Christmas Child (Samaritan's Purse), we are able to share the love of Jesus while providing a gift for a child who may not know that Christmas exists, much less what it is about. This also helps my own children remember how abundantly blessed we are and to be good stewards of our resources."

10. "For Christmas this year we are having dinner at our home with just my husband and children. For our family we will go to midnight mass and I will invite friends and family for Christmas eve, but my husband and I have decided the best thing for our children is to have dinner just us. My in laws wil come over in the morning to watch the kids open gifts and then they have dinner at their home.

Because of a severe rift in the family I thought the best thing I could do to celebrate Jesus and enjoy this holiday is to stay home, and I'm really looking forward to it.

I also hope to find a place where our family can volunteer for Thanksgiving. I want to show our children ages 4, 2, and 7 weeks we have so much to be grateful for and to show them how other people live."

11. "We like to bake and deliver to the elderly and widows of our church. We also take trays of baked goods to the police, fire fighters, and ambulance personnel in our town as well as the Senior Living Center staff. We also like to participate in our church special Christmas project. One year it was a local family. Another year it was Operation Christmas Child. No matter what the project or service...if you do it with the right heart, it's keeping Christ in Christmas."

12. "We do Samaritan's Purse. I love doing this! We also have a Jesse Tree. This year I am determined to FINALLY finish cross-stitching the ornaments, I'm half way there. I like to wear my Jesus is the Reason for the Season pin. I tell others Merry Christmas when I'm out, no matter what they say to me."

TPC "lite": Face-off with Make-Up

Discussing our make-up drawers, Kathi writes, “I want you to stay healthy and sty-free. Do us both a favor and get rid of anything that has the potential to blind you.” (The Get Yourself Organized Project, pg. 70)
This should be quick and easy!

Plowing through my make-up bag and the contents of my make-up “junk drawer,” I find:

1.  My hanging make-up bag is great for travel but awkward for daily use. Pull things out of one pouch. Use them. Put them back. Pull things out of the next pouch. Etc. I feel like it takes forever (which, for a Choleric, is defined as more than 3 minutes) to “fix my face.”
2.  My spur-of-the-moment purchase of Rembrandt. What was I thinking? $20 for a product I can not use. My teeth are so full of fillings that match their current color (which is so “off" white it’s more like “miles away from” white) I’ll end up two-toned if I bleach them.

3.  My favorite colors of nail polish. For a pedicure. That I’ve needed for at least 8 weeks.

4.  My costume sunglasses. I use the big ones when I take on my alter-ego “Destiny,” the Country Western Diva. The cat-eye glasses were actually worn by my mother in the 60’s.

5.   My stash of razors. I’m ¼ Armenian. In shorts weather, I can shave my leggs at 6:00 AM and have 5:00 shadow by noon.

Replacing Baditude
Whooo-wheee!  Plenty of "baditude" showed up quick and easy!
1.  I-don’t-wanna-tude: I really loathe anything I have to do over and over again, day in and day out. Such a waste of time for no sense of accomplishment!
2.  I-hate-my-smile-tude: Due to genetics and my teenage eating disorder, I have a mouth full of root canals and crowns. And yellow “teeth.” Ugh.
3.  I-don’t-deserve-it-tude: I keep thinking how nice it would be to grab a bottle and go to the nail salon or even give myself a DIY pedi. But only the most basic “self care” makes it on my To Do list.
4.  I-never-have-any-fun-any-more-tude: I’m a Sanguine by birth. But by my life, you’d assume I'm an oddly messy Melancholy/Choleric. When “dress up” opportunities roll around, I’m usually too stressed/busy to jump in and join the fun.
5.  See #1.

With God’s Word
On Day 9, I wrote that new people don’t need to use criticism. (Not even privately toward themselves.)

(Can't view image? Click here to view 2 Corinthians 5:17!)

I am new. No matter how old, ugly, or over-stressed I feel, I am new in Christ!
On Day 10, I wrote about the difference between self-confidence and Christ-confidence (which is made up of courage, hope, satisfaction, and assurance in God.)

(Can't view image? Click here to view Ephesians 3:12!)

I am confident. I don’t need a perfectly painted-on face, pearly-white teeth, a brand new pedicure, more chances to perform, or hair-free legs to become confident. I am confident because of Christ.
I need to let go of my resistance to regular self-care routines.
I need to Let God re-new my mind and heart daily (... hourly ... second-by-second ...)
I need to let go of comparing myself to what I used to look like and what I wish I looked like.
I need to Let God fill me with Christ-confidence (no fretting about the “self” kind.)

And Gratitude

from my journal:
Today I’m praying…

  • ...to use “fix-my-face” time to reinforce God’s word in my heart.
  • ...for courage to exercise my smile muscles (and not worry about my teeth.)
  • ...that I’ll jump at or create an opportunity for fun today.
Today I’m watching for…

  • ...a chance to affirm that I still think Daniel’s the most handsome guy alive. (He gripes in the mirror every chance he gets!)
  • ...a woman to whom I can give a sincere complement.
  • ...an opportunity to turn one of today’s “baditudes” around into gratitude.
Today I’m appreciating…

  • …the miracle of contact lenses so I’m not wearing ½-inch thick glasses!
  • …my fabulous new shell and cascading sweater duster from the Coldwater Creek outlet! :-)
  • …spending the afternoon “hanging out” with Daniel (while wearing my fabulous new shell and cascading sweater duster!)

Your turn!

  • What "baditude" do you think/know is lurking in your make-up bag or drawer?
  • How can you flip it to gratitude?
  • Other thoughts / reflections / insights on today's topic?

Ironically, I’ve been feeling insecure about today’s word.

Trying to think of what to say about a word regarding which I know so little, I headed to one of my favorite books: the thesaurus.
Some synonyms for “Confident” are PURSE-onality qualities I want to avoid:
  • Audacious
  • Brazen
  • Presumptuous
  • Pushy
  • Self-assured
Other synonyms invite exploration.
Courageous
In her TED talk “The Power of Vulnerability,” Brene Brown cites the original meaning of courage as “telling the story of who you are with your whole heart.”
I like that.
As a vicarious learner, I am richly blessed by Christians who risk vulnerability to tell the stories of what Christ has done, and is doing, in their lives.
Best of all is hearing one of my students sharing her testimony. Although her voice may be shaking, and her volume barely above a whisper, her open heart speaks with courageous power.
Hopeful
The move from expectations to hope is one of the great works God is doing in my life.
Does it take everyone decades of disappointment before they finally decide to pack up and leave expectations behind?
Or am I just an especially stubborn case? (Don't answer that!)
I’m just now learning to quit meddling. To take a "Mind My Own Business Challenge" (any takers?!?) and stop forcing my expectations onto everyone within reach. To sit, instead, in silence, prayer, and hope.
Satisfied
A life-long perfectionist, I’ve spent four decades striving for, but never reaching, satisfaction.
  • “If only ____ would _____, then I would...”
  • “Just one more _____ and I could...”
  • “When I finally ____, I will...”
Enough!
I’ve had enough of this entitled, insatiable, scarcity thinking!
Enough.
I’m finding that when I look for the good in my life, I have enough. I am more than satisfied.
Sure
When I became a teenager, my father told me, “If you ever need me to come get you, just call. I will come. You don’t have to explain. Just call. I will come. Or I will pay whatever the cost to get you home.”
I only called once.
He appeared within moments (it seemed!)
I knew, for sure, that he would come. Any time.
Self-Confident?
Being confident means that we have ...
courage that Christ is working in our hearts.
hope in God’s perfect plans for our lives.
satisfaction with God’s blessings.
assurance that we can “just call” our Father. Any time.
(If you're not able to see the image, download Ephesians 3:12 here.)

And others who are desperately
seeking courage
seeking hope
seeking satisfaction
seeking assurance
will see our Christ-confidence and be drawn to its Source.

Try this today: Pray that your heart will be opened to one specific situation requiring courage, hope, satisfaction, and/or assurance. Once identified, ask, "What would Christ-confidence look like in this situation?" Then, as the Holy Spirit leads, follow!
